How to recognize a true eco-sustainable garment

What do you find in this post

Today it has become really difficult to understand what an eco-sustainable garment is, by now all product labels are practically the same: eco, 100% recyclable, sustainable... but is it all true? Is there a way to buy safely?

Don't be enchanted by green labels, cliches and meaningless wordings because if you look closely at the labels, the facts don't really seem like that... in this article we will try to clarify things a bit. Let's start with the definition of an eco-sustainable garment.

A garment can be defined as eco-sustainable when the raw materials and the production process do not damage or pollute the ecosystem that surrounds us. An eco-sustainable product must have a long duration over time until the end of its life cycle.

As we can already see from the definition, the fundamental points to understand if a garment is eco-sustainable are:

  • the composition of the fabrics;
  • the place of production;
  • the life of the product itself.

But if we analyze the situation more closely and talk about Circular Economy then we realize other points to consider such as:

  • who is the brand that produces?
  • the price?
  • what kind of world do you want to support?

Are you confused? Well I was too some time ago but I promise you that as you continue reading this article... you will have a greater awareness of how it's really done. eco friendly riding. In our specific case, handcrafted in Italy. Are you ready? Street!

Fabric composition

Where is the composition of the fabrics? How do you read?

You will find all the information on the garment you want to buy inside the garment itself, do you know those labels inside the garments that you tear off every time because they are bulky and cause a lot of discomfort? Here are exactly those, there you can find all the information about the product from the composition, passing to the washing cycle and then finishing the place of production. But how do you read?

Let's take for example this label of a Fedda product.

The Fedda labels are very clear, this product is made with 83% recycled Nilon (nylon is a very resistant synthetic fabric, it is obtained using high quality polyamide fiber with a dense but extremely light woven plain weave) and 17 % Recycled Elastane (Elastane is a very elastic fiber which when coupled with Polyamide allows to obtain yarns with unique characteristics: very durable and strong, very elastic, resistant to abrasion, very bright, resistant to mold and fungi, non-flammable) .

Currently in outdoor clothing, recycled fibers are the most eco-sustainable on the market because they use existing material and the processes are low-impact.

In the case of sport and above all in horse riding, due to the high performance required, the use of eco-sustainable materials is reduced to recycled products because there is a need for very elastic and perhaps waterproof materials, obviously made with polyamide (within the processing there are plastic materials) recycling is a great start, but not enough! Let's hope that organic materials can be used soon and why not that Fedda can contribute to the realization, it would be wonderful, but let's get back to us.

When you cannot choose organic materials such as cotton, linen, hemp, etc., because you need maximum elasticity, then make sure you wear quality, breathable synthetic material, such as Fedda products.

Production place

Why is the place of production so important? Let's do a simple Google search asking, which are the countries that pollute the most in the world?? we find:

  1. CHINA WITH 9,9 billion tons of CO2;
  2. UNITED STATES 4,5 billion tons of Co2;
  3. INDIA (and Bangladesh, Pakistan, etc…) 2,3 billion tons of Co2.

In these states there are no environmental restrictions on the production of goods, they have no work ethic and no hygiene obligations. By now we all know that it is practically impossible not to buy imported products because by now almost everything is imported, it is a fact, but it is important to be aware that the purchase of goods from these countries actually fuels the situation and until globally address the problem little can be done; but let's move on to another important point.

Who is the brand that produces?

If you know the brand, you already know a large part of your product! If the company is transparent, it will release all the information you need to understand if the product is truly eco-sustainable through all their channels.

Generally the artisanal activities already produce eco-sustainable garments, due to the smaller production, the quality but above all the passion behind their products. This analysis takes us quickly to the next points, keep reading!

Durability and resistance of the product

If a garment is produced with quality materials, well-made workmanship, it can only last a long time this is the secret of a quality and eco-sustainable product, obviously remember that care in use and washing is essential above all not never fails!

Another truth about eco-sustainable products that must always be taken into account is…

The price

The price is the real sore point of this new type of fashion that is emerging! Eco-sustainable production costs are much higher than those of fast fashion, more is invested in quality materials and certified and fairly paid labour, this affects a lot on the final price, but anyone who tries on an eco-sustainable garment is enchanted by it.

Beware of fake! The wording "100% recyclable" is now widely used but most of the time it is simply because it is a product made of virgin plastic (that is, created from new and not recycled). Of course it is 100% recyclable but there is nothing green or eco-sustainable about it.

What kind of world do you want to support?

I think this point is very important, because when you buy a garment from a brand, you embrace its mission and support the growth of the company that produces the very garment you are wearing. The importance of a purchase is never underlined, because with your purchase you are supporting a reality, you are saying I like this, this is what I want for myself.

This is why when you buy something it is important to know what you are buying, how it is produced and what ethics the company has. Fedda products are made with this ethic: in addition to buying a unique product designed and packaged for your comfort, you are supporting a brand that is really working to contribute to a better future!

And what if not this is the added value to show off when you choose an eco-sustainable garment like Fedda? We hope this article will help you in your future eco-friendly purchases!
